I was obese … ?

Hi there …

I think it’s been about 2 weeks since I last wrote.  I wonder how you have been doing.

We had company from KL the first week, then we all fell sick after that.  It took us a complete week to recover.  The kids got the seasonal virus that’s been going around and I got food-poisoned!

Anyway, on with my post for today …

I was watching Bella on NTV7 this morning and they had a segment on pregnant women and health.  One O&G professor from UM said the rule of thumb for women to gain weight when pregnant is between 11 and 16 kg and if the woman is obese, it would be around 7kg.

Only 11 to 16 kilos??  Gee … I was overweight!!!  During my last pregnancy with the twins, my last recorded weight was 89.5!  At the start, I was about 62kilos.  I gained about 27.5kilos! Well, yeah, I’m better when I eat.  Unlike to some, they can’t eat as they can’t keep the food down.  For me, it’s the other way round.  Hahaha …

My oh my … Dr. Siti never stopped me from gaining more weight.  She said I’m doing okay 🙂  You know, come to think of it, she’s one part of the pregnancy that always make me happy …  Thanks, Dr. Siti!

Towards the end …

Though this is my third pregnancy, it’s not easy carrying twins.  You’re heavier, bigger, aching and swollen all over.  My feet and hands are so swollen that it’s difficult to grip.  I would need to use both hands to squeeze out stretch mark lotion from the bottle!

Throughout the day, my arms and legs feel numb from time to time 😦

I no longer feel comfortable sleeping on my sides.  I’ll be tossing and turning non-stop throughout the night.  I find it very difficult to get out of bed.  If possible, I wish I have an armchair to sleep in that’s sturdy and with lots of pillows.  It’ll be much more comfortable than a bed.

The maternity belt that I’ve been using doesn’t seem to help much nowadays.  The belt almost doesn’t fit me now.  hehehe …  Yeah, I’m really huge now.

I try to rest as much as possible.  But it’s quite difficult to do so when you have two toddlers who are so attached to you.  [Come to think of it, by the time the twins are born, I have four kids all under 4 years old!]

I still think about work.  Good thing that my company’s management is considerate to let me work from home.  I’ve been working at home for a few weeks and stopped working starting this week.

So, three days to go … how do I feel?  A nervous wreck!  People say third time should be easy.  Well, not if you’re having twins for the first time and you’re not sure what to expect when they’ve come out 🙂

Time to take a rest.  I’ve been sick the past few days and the kids caught the cold from me.  Today is the fourth day Zayan is on the nebulizer.  We’ve got a loan unit from the clinic as the doctor hasn’t seen much improvement the first three days.  Today, Zayan needs a session every four hours.  By evening, Zayan needs to see the doctor to check on his progress.  Wish us the best!

Counting down to 22.02.2010

Hi … It’s been a very long time since I have written anything on my blog.

4 days to go … We’re counting down to the 22nd.  That’s the confirmed delivery date for the twins.  I’ll be checking in to the hospital by 6pm on Sunday.  Insya’allah … I will be attending a cousin’s anniversary celebration that evening.  She’s expecting too.  Her fourth girl.  You see … we’re kinda in the same boat.  I’ve been trying to get a girl, while she’s been trying to get a boy.  I’m ending up with 4 boys by Monday, while she’s ending up with 4 girls as well.  *sigh*  just our luck, huh … ?

At the same time, we’re in the midst of moving to a new place.  Our own little place … Currently, we’re staying with my father in law and with the twins coming, we’re kinda running out of space.  We should be settling down by this weekend.  The movers are coming this Saturday.  Then .. come Sunday, I’ll be at the hospital for delivery on Monday.

Before I sign off, I want to wish friends and family a very Happy Chinese New Year!  Let’s welcome the Tiger and hope this year is going to be a better year for all of us!

The delivery is scheduled earlier

I had my routine check-up yesterday.  We rescheduled the delivery 9 days earlier.  The babies are due out on 17th February 2010.  That’s about 4 weeks earlier than the original due date.  Saying so, for my next check-up, I’m required to have 2 steroid jabs to assist in maturing the babies’ lungs.  This would prevent respiratory problems later.  The jabs are given 12 hours apart.

Almost due?

It’s more than the umpteenth time someone comes to me and ask if I’m due already … May it be a total stranger, colleagues who I’ve not seen back at the office, or even employees at Menara TM.  Well, I can’t blame them.  I am really huge and I look like I’m going to burst!

At first, I just smile … But after a while, I just gotta tell them I’m expecting twins 🙂  I can’t stand it when they look at me with this unbelievable expression when they found out that I’m just about 6 months along.  *sigh*

Maternity belt does ease the pain

Lately, I’ve been experiencing discomfort and pain around my belly and back, particularly the lower back.  There are many nights when I have difficulty sleeping.  I’m pretty heavy now and it feels as if I’m ready for delivery.  haha …

The belt is by Oppo, a brand from UK.  It is well respected among medicine physicians and physiotherapists.

Anyway, my darling hubby got me a maternity belt yesterday from the pharmacy at the Sime Darby Medical Centre. The belt costs RM54.00.  It’s cheaper than some places selling maternity belts and it’s very basic.  I found a site selling the same belt at RM59.00.  I vaguely remember a belt from another brand selling at over RM100.00.  For me, Oppo feels great and it does it’s job just well.

There’s a post I found about maternity belts and why pregnant women are experiencing back pain towards the end of their pregnancy.  Read here.

Pregnant moms, if you feel uneasy around your abdomen, I would suggest getting a belt.  It works wonders.  I feel happy I have one to ease the discomforts throughout the day.

Take care!

The t.w.i.n.s are boys

I’m back to work today.  I took leave yesterday for my monthly checkup.

On my last visit, I found Dr. Siti keeping her hair long.  She’s keeping it long to look younger, she said.  Hehehe …  All these years, she’s been having short hair.  On this visit, Dr. Siti had her hair curled and she does look prettier and YOUNGER!

I was alone.  Hubby had a 3pm appointment and couldn’t make it.

Dr. Siti did the ultra sound and told me that the babies are ok.  No anomaly found.  Both babies’ weight are in the 500 gm range.  By now, the babies are in their 22nd week.

Then she asked whether I’d like to know the sex.  Both are boys.  Oh my god, boys!  I was quite disappointed, but I knew my mother-in-law would be.  She’s been wanting to have a granddaughter for ages.  With the twins, she’s got 7 grandsons.  Oh well, just not my luck/rezeki.  I won’t be having any more babies after this.  I’ve decided to close shop.  Maybe later, a few years later, if I’m still yearning for a daughter, I will adopt one.  A baby girl.  Yup, I guess that’s what I’ll do.  It’s alright for me to take another’s baby and call it my own.

Dr. Siti also prescribed Calcium Caltrate which replaces the Calcium Lactate.  With Calcium Lactate, I need to take 2 tablets.  With Calcium Caltrate, I would only need to take 1 tablet.  It comes with Vitamin D for easier absorption.

My expected due date is mid of March.  We discussed on having the delivery by the 3rd week of February.  That’s about 37th week.  This is to avoid from rupture.  She also explained that I would need to take an injection by 32 week to mature the babies’ lungs.

Earlier on, hubby and I discussed to have the delivery done on special dates in relation to the number 8.  I’m born on the 8th.  He’s born on the 17th.  1 plus 7 equals 8.  Our two boys are also born on the 17th.  We thought of setting the delivery date to 26th of February.  Now, if Dr. Siti says that it should be within the 3rd week of February, then that would most probably be 17th instead of the 26th.  In short, I will be the odd one in the family: the only female and the only one born on the 8th.  hahahaha …

Well, that’s all for now.  Au revoir!

Hep B vaccination

Hepatitis is the infection of the liver causing scarring of the liver, liver failure and liver cancer.  Hepatitis B is the most common liver infection in the world.

It is best that pregnant women should already have the Hep B vaccination done.  I’m not, however. I would need to have 3 shots done in a period of 6 months.  I won’t be able to get mine done as I am in my 4th month and the babies might not be protected by the time I have the 3rd shot as it would need a few days to be effective.  Yup, it’s pretty close to the delivery date.

Babies can be infected with the virus during pregnancy or delivery.  In my case, my gynae advised to take it right after the delivery.  The each of the babies would have their 2 shots in the delivery room and I would have mine too.

For those who are concerned about Hep B in pregnancy, I would like to share a good guideline from Hepatitis B Foundation.

What’s Sangobion?

My gynae prescribed me Sangobion by Merck.

Curious, I googled and found that Sangobion is prescribed to those who are anaemic.  It replenishes the iron in the blood and corrects the hemoglobin level in the blood.

Looking back at the blood test results I got 3 weeks ago …  My GP explained that my hemoglobin level is low, but did not prescribe anything.  Instead, he advised to visit my gynae.  He also explained that it’s important to have the Hep B shots done when expecting.

So when we met the gynae, she said there’s no need for alarm that my hemoglobin level is low.  But once we discovered that I’m expecting twins, she prescribed Sangobion.  Some of the symptoms that I experienced due to anaemia are:

  • A fast or irregular heartbeat
  • Shortness of breath
  • Dizziness
  • Frequent headaches

I had no idea that the symptoms were telling me there’s something wrong.  I thought it was all due to the pregnancy.

I’m not sure about paleness … I think I’ve always been pale … haha 😛

Did you know that there is a maternity toothpaste?

Hi all,

I discovered a maternity toothpaste a year ago by Pureen.  I think it was launched only then as I would have used it when I had my 2 boys.

A couple of months ago, there was a Pureen warehouse sale in PJ.  It came at the right time too.  I discovered I was pregnant then so I needed some to get some things for the coming baby (though it’s still a long way away till delivery).  There’s no knowing when the next sale is going to be.  We also needed to get some basic stuff for the boys and we needed to get loads of adult diapers for my sick father-in-law.

I knew I had to get the special toothpaste.  I knew it would help me get through the initial phase of nausea, queasiness, bloatness, anything, you name it.

I read somewhere that the flouride actually makes people like me feel sick and contributes to constant vomitting.  I’m not sure how … I wish I remember where I read it so I can share with you all.

During pregnancy, many women have the desire to snack on carbohydrate containing food. The bacteria will convert the starch/sugar that remains in the mouth/plaque to acids. In women with severe morning sickness, nausea and vomiting leaves stomach acids in the mouth. Acids can damage the surface of the teeth and promote tooth decay.

You can read the full product details here.

I’ve been using the toothpaste and it works for me.  It helps to reduce the uneasy feeling particularly when brushing your teeth.  Though it does not take away the morning sickness totally.  It helps to make it a little tolerable 🙂

I found another link on this product, which I hope is useful for pregnant moms 🙂
